What DeBary does to a pool

DeBary sits between the St. Johns River and the oak hammocks that gave our street its name, and both show up in the pool. Spring pollen off the live oaks turns a screened pool yellow along the waterline for weeks. The river side of town has high groundwater, which matters the moment anyone talks about draining a pool for an acid wash or a resurface.

Summer afternoons bring the storms in off Lake Monroe. A hard rain drops the pH, dilutes the chlorine, and washes whatever was on the screen into the water. Pools here need a real chemical adjustment every week, not a tablet dropped in the skimmer.

The pools we see here

A lot of DeBary was built from the late eighties through the two thousands, especially the golf course neighborhoods off DeBary Plantation Boulevard and the streets around Glen Abbey. Those pools are now old enough that the original plaster is rough, the waterline tile is popping in spots, and the single speed pump is on its second or third motor.

Newer homes near the SunRail station and along Fort Florida Road have younger pools with cartridge filters and variable speed pumps, and the work there is mostly keeping the chemistry honest and the salt cells clean.
