Pools on acreage

Osteen homes sit on big rural lots between Deltona and the St. Johns, most of them off State Road 415 and the roads that branch from it. A pool on five acres with pasture on one side and pines on the other gets a different kind of debris than a subdivision pool: sand, pine needles, and whatever the wind carries across open ground.

Many of these pools aren't screened. Without a cage, the sun hits the water all day and burns off chlorine, and the rain lands straight in. Stabilizer levels and weekly chemical adjustments matter more here than almost anywhere else we go.

Well water is the local variable

Nearly every pool in Osteen fills from a well, and the wells here run high in iron and sometimes sulfur. Iron stains plaster orange and turns the water tea colored after a top off. Sulfur smells and eats chlorine.

We treat well fed pools differently. Sequestering agents to hold the metals, more frequent filter cleaning, and a look at the fill line to see whether a simple pre filter would save the plaster.

Lake Ashby and the river side

Out toward Lake Ashby and the river the water table is high and the ground floods in a wet summer. If your pad went under water, the pump motor needs checking before it's run again.
