Pools under the canopy

Lake Helen's charm is its trees. Live oaks arch over most of the streets, and the older homes near the lake and the historic district sit under a canopy that never fully opens. A pool under that cover gets less sun, so algae has an easier time, and it gets far more debris, so the skimmer basket is full every visit.

Spanish moss is the local extra. It drops into pools in clumps after any wind, it holds water, and it stains the plaster if it sits on the floor. Brushing and vacuuming matter more here than in a wide open subdivision.

Older homes and older equipment

Many Lake Helen pools were put in behind homes that were already old when the pool went in. The plumbing runs are long and sometimes odd, the pads have been rebuilt by several hands, and the filters are often undersized for the leaf load.

We spend more time on the equipment side in Lake Helen than in most towns. Getting the filter and pump matched to the debris load is the difference between a pool that stays clear and one that fights you all fall.
